The feminine equivalent of a bar
mitzvah. Whereas
the bar mitzvah is a coming-of-age ceremony for boys on their
13th birthday that dates back hundreds of years, the bat mitzvah was created in the early 20th century. It was not until the 80s and 90s though that they became widely celebrated.
The reason bat mitzvahs exist is not because of tradition, but insteada because women, and girls need to feel equal to men, and boys in every way now, to the nth degree.
The bat mitzvah begins in the temple, with the formal service, and then is followed by a lavish reception.
Some hallmarks are: Screaming young girls, trendy deejays, and expensive party gifts.
